It is vital to proper neurodevelopment of a young child that their environment include safety and love. It doesn’t have to be perfect – simply free of a few variables, such as chaos, abuse, inconsistencies, manipulation, and selfishness (from the adult). The impact of a mother’s psychopathy upon her child can be significant and life changing.
The bottom line
is that abuse
changes the brain.
Possible impact on her child
Abuse, mistreatment, neglect, and callousness from someone within the ‘mother position’ can create a brain that can easily become externally oriented (e.g., heightened degree of scanning the environment for threats) rather than calm or regulated.
Some adult children of psychopathic mothers might even demonstrate longstanding personality and/ or cognitive problems, such as:
• People pleasing
•Emotional Dysregulation
• Dependent personality traits
• Attachment problems
• Cognitive difficulties (e.g., concentration /attention problems)
• Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)
• Depression
• Anxiety
• Low Self Esteem | Minimal value of self
• Poor boundaries
• Allowing others to tread their boundaries
• Extreme caretaking
• Valuing others above self
